Ratchet sounds

Ratchet-style shakers and scrapers deliver single strikes, rhythmic turns and continuous rustles that range from dry wooden clicks to layered metal jingles. The group includes many folk and ceremonial instruments such as sistrum, castanets, rain sticks and various pods or boxes whose names do not reveal their rattle. Lengths run from quick one-shake hits of two or three seconds up to half-minute party and toy performances that function as short beds rather than brief cues.
